Who are the Memons?
Memons are a Muslim community of Sindhi-Gujarati origin, known for their entrepreneurial heritage, strong faith, and tradition of philanthropy. They number approximately 3.5 million and are found in over 50 countries.
What language do Memons speak?
Memons speak Memoni (or Maimoni), an Indo-Aryan language blending Sindhi, Gujarati, Urdu and Arabic. Most Memons are multilingual and also speak the dominant language of their country of residence.
Where do most Memons live today?
The largest Memon populations are in Pakistan (Karachi), India (Mumbai, Gujarat), the United Kingdom, South Africa, the UAE, Kenya, Tanzania, and North America (USA and Canada).
What are the main Memon sub-groups?
The main sub-groups are Halai, Kutchi, Bantva, Okhai, Kathiawari, and Sindhi Memons — each named after their geographic region of origin in Gujarat or Sindh.
What is a Jamaat?
A Jamaat is a Memon community association that provides welfare services, religious programmes, cultural events, and social support to members. Most cities with significant Memon populations have an active Jamaat.
